Magnolia Quality Development Corporation Limited (MQDC), a leading Thailand-based real estate developer under the watchword ‘For All Well-being’ that owns and develops projects under the Whizdom brand, has launched ‘BE THE CHANGE’ under the philosophy ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world’. The initiative will recruit New Gen individuals, aged 17-30 with a passion for sustainable social development, to learn together to create social enterprises and a healthy, sustainable society. Participants will attend self-development classes in preparation for starting social enterprises and could win the special prize of a free study trip to Japan to learn about technology and the environment. Applications are open until 10 December.

Mr. Krissayuth Chavavitayatham, Vice President of Whizdom Society at MQDC, said: “With a business philosophy aimed at giving back to society, amid today’s intensifying social and environmental challenges, we want to help alleviate problems by giving the New Generation, who will gain power in business and society over the next 10 years, a chance to develop their leadership capabilities. We want the new generation to pay attention and contribute ideas, in particular, to social enterprise (SE), which can change Thai society by helping solving social problems.

“The expansion in social enterprises will continue to address social problems concretely and sustainably. In many countries we have found that the trend toward social enterprises can help tackle diverse social problems that affect society at large or a few people needing short- or long-term help. Such issues occur in developing countries and in developed ones like the UK. Europe has led in developing social enterprises, with about 70,000, reflecting government support for the sector. India’s Aravind Eye Hospital and Aurolab is a recognized social enterprise, using medical technology and public health services to affordably treat people while staying financially sustainable. South Africa’s PlayPump aims to help solve the lack of clean water with roundabouts where children help pump clean water from wells to water tanks. There are about 700 such pumps installed in the country. Revenue comes from selling advertising space at the pump area, with content on issues such as AIDS campaigns for children.”

“In Thailand, we have some interesting and successful SE business entrepreneurs, such as Doi Tung Development Project, Techsauce Media, Local Alike. Participants in our course will get to learn directly from the New Generation founders of these businesses such as Natwut Amornvivat, who created the ‘Read for the Blind’ app, Somsak Boonkam, who founded Local A Like, Atchariya Darote, who founded the AIYA chat-bot, and many leading speakers, who will give insights on legal, technological, and management aspects for progress and success.”

“BE THE CHANGE is an 8-week course covering many areas, including professional knowledge and workshops such as Digital Shift 2020, Sustainability Business, Innovative Thinking, UX Design, Leadership and Teamwork, Storytelling, Law for SE, and Entrepreneurial Mindset. Participants will also learn from helping develop projects to create real social change in an area that interests them with help from a mentor. They will present their projects on Demo Day. The project owner who receives the highest score from the committee will receive the special prize of a study trip to Japan to see various modern technologies and innovations and join the Earth Day Tokyo event, dedicated to spreading information about famous environmental campaigns in Japan.”

Note
Social Enterprises are organizations that operate using market-based strategies for social or environmental goals. Social enterprise operations focus on social, environmental, and financial goals at the same time, known as the Triple Bottom Line. Revenue is meant to benefit society or the environment rather than the company or shareholders, as in a conventional business.
